Heel Pain worse than the fishing on Deadliest Catch

I saw a recent episode of Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel that caught my eye.  On the "Thick as Thieves" episode (Season 7 Episode 7) that first aired on May 24 it wasn't the bitter cold, driving rain, seasickness, or a fishing injury that got a veteran crew member to leave deck to retreat to his bunk...it was heel pain.  One of the deckhands was incapacitated by Plantar Fasciitis.  He was unable to step on his foot and therefore he was unable to do his job.  Plantar fasciitis (heel pain) is one of the most common problems we see in our office.  I wish this guy was here in the Tampa area rather than up in Alaska because we could get him feeling better and back on deck right away.

American Diabetes Association Alert Day in Tampa

Americans are urged to "Join the Million Challenge" on American Diabetes Association Alert Day by taking the Diabetes Risk Test and finding out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
Tuesday, March 22, 2011 is the 23rd annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day, a one-day, "wake-up" call  asking Americans to "Join the Million Challenge" by taking the Diabetes Risk Test and find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and if they are at high risk, to speak with their health care provider.
At the end of 2010, the American Diabetes Association surpassed their goal of inspiring one million Americans to join the American Diabetes Association's movement to Stop Diabetes®.  To continue this momentum, the Association is asking the public to "Join the Million Challenge" by rallying one million people to take the Diabetes Risk Test and find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, beginning on Diabetes Alert Day on March 22, 2011 and ending April 22, 2011.
Diabetes is a devastating disease that affects nearly 26 million Americans including. A quarter of those affected by diabetes are not aware that they have the disease.  If current trends continue, one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050. In addition, approximately 79 million, or one in three American adults have prediabetes, which means that their blood glucose (sugar) is higher than normal but is not high enough to be classified as diabetes.  Without intervention, individuals with prediabetes are at a much higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes.  Seeking to change the future of diabetes, the American Diabetes Association is using Diabetes Alert Day to help identify the undiagnosed and those at risk for type 2 diabetes by educating people about diabetes risk factors and warning signs.
Unfortunately, people with type 2 diabetes can live for years without realizing that they have this serious disease. While some people with diabetes exhibit noticeable symptoms (such as frequent urination, blurred vision and excessive thirst), most people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes do not experience these overt warning signs at the time that they develop the disease.  Often, type 2 diabetes only becomes evident when people develop one or more of its serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye damage or nerve damage, which can lead to amputation.
2011 Diabetes Alert Day"Studies have shown that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by losing just 7% of body weight (15 pounds if you weigh 200) through regular physical activity (30 minutes a day, five days a week) and healthy eating," said Gina Perales Hethcock, Director of Communications and Hispanic Initiatives for the North Texas office. "The American Diabetes Association hopes that this American Diabetes Association Alert Day will encourage people to 'Join the Million Challenge.' By understanding your risk, you can take the necessary steps to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes."
To help people determine their risk for type 2 diabetes, the American Diabetes Association provides the Diabetes Risk Test, which entails answering simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for diabetes. People at high risk are encouraged to speak with their health care providers.  You can "Join the Million Challenge" by getting your free Diabetes Risk Test (English or Spanish) at www.stopdiabetes.com, 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383) or text JOIN to 69866 (Standard data and message rates apply).  Although Diabetes Alert Day is a one-day event, the Diabetes Risk Test is available year round.
The Association is also encouraging the public to help spread the word about Diabetes Alert Day by sending out messages on Facebook and Twitter.  You can download a Diabetes Alert Day application to post on your Facebook page or you can tweet about the importance of understanding one's risk for type 2 diabetes and provide a link to the Diabetes Risk Test at stopdiabetes.com.
The primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes are being overweight, sedentary, over the age of 45 and having a family history of diabetes.  African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at increased risk, as are women who have had babies weighing more than nine pounds at birth.

Did Lucy Have a Podiatrist?

Lucy, the famous fossil found in 1974 from 3 million years ago, probably walked upright on two feet according to a foot bone found recently in Ethiopia.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/15/science/15oblucy.html?_r=1&emc=eta1  The Metatarsal bone (long bone that connects the back of your foot to your toes) found recently proves that the species Australopithecus afarensis had an arch to their foot (like humans and unlike apes) which would allow them to walk upright.  With a metatarsal bone that big I would need a really big saw to remove that bunion.

P90X Update

So I am in my first recovery week of my new years resolution of completing P90X.  The first month was difficult but also very rewarding.  I have seen great improvements in strength and I have put on 9 pounds of muscle (I was 179lbs and 6'3" when I started so I needed to bulk up).  I am already doing many more push-ups, pull-ups, curls, etc.  I cant wait for round 2 and 3 so see what kind of gains I can continue to make.  The part that has been the most amazing to me has been my appetite.  I am craving "good food".  I don't want fatty things or sweets.  I want protein and carbs.  I'll keep you all posted with my results.

72% of Overweight Americans Blame Foot Pain as a Cause

I just came across an interesting study put out by the American Podiatric Medical Association.  Of 1000 subjects interviewed 72% blamed foot pain for them not exercising to stay in shape.  Here is a link to the article.  http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/Foot-Pain-Making-72-Percent-of-Americans-Fat-1384973.htm Another interesting fact is that Americans feel that their feet are the least important part of their body when it comes to their health which I found absolutely amazing.  People just don't appreciate their feet.  Everything you do and everywhere you go is thanks to your feet and therefore they must be an integral part of your health.  Hopefully Americans will change their views on this and start taking care of their feet (you only have two and you gotta take care of them because they are with you every step of the day.)
